The French authorities continue to tear down the makeshift 'Jungle' camp in Calais.
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the government will be vigorously involved in relocation of the migrants.
Two bulldozers and about 20 workers were employed in dismantling the southern part of the camp. According to Agence France Press, riot police cordoned off parts of the camp while demolition teams dismantled shelters.
Two anti-riot vans stationed nearby.
On Wednesday night the camp clearance was halted because of the protests. Some migrants (mostly Iranians) sewed their mouths shut to protest the mass evictions and destruction of the camp claiming the authorities violated their rights. After some time, the work on dismantling the camp was resumed.
However, activists of NGOs say the relocation of the 'Jungle' is not only useless, but even detrimental.
“Demolition will not change anything as people are still here and the situation is only getting worse. The governement does not have enough place for everyone”, says Maya Conforti, a representative from L'Auberge Des Migrants.
