China

The second place in this ranking is taken by China, whose spending on science is $451.2 billion. The total cost of research and development per a researcher in China is $266.6 thousand. In 2016, the number of scientists in the country amounted to 1,692,200 people.

Japan

The land of the rising sun takes the third place in terms of spending on scientific research ($168.6 billion). Two years ago, the number of researchers in Japan was 665.6 thousand people. The land of the rising sun is recognized as one of the leaders of world scientific thought. It has a high level of development in the areas of IT-technologies, robotics, medicine, and space research.

Germany

The fourth position among the states which invest maximum amounts in science is occupied by Germany ($118.5 billion). The main source of research funding in the country is private business. Organizations working in the field of science are the German Research Foundation, the Max Planck Society (21 Institutes), the Fraunhofer Society (19 institutes and branches) and others.

South Korea

The fifth line in this ranking goes to South Korea with spending on science in the amount of $79.4 billion. The country leads the way in many positions. In electronics, Samsung, the world's IT leader, serves as a flagship of the Korean economy; in the automotive industry, there is Hyundai-Kia, and others.

France

The sixth line in the list of countries that actively invest in the scientific industry is occupied by France ($62.2 billion). The Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research of France is responsible for the scientific sphere. It develops and implements innovative policy in the country.

India

The seventh place among science-oriented countries is taken by India with a cost of this sector of $50.1 billion. The country has developed nuclear power and defense industry. In India, there is also the Center for Development of Advanced Computing .

Great Britain

The eighth position among the states investing in the scientific development goes to Great Britain, whose expenditures in this sector amount to $47.2 billion. A lot of important studies are being conducted in the country. Most attention in the UK is given to natural and technical sciences. A great number of important inventions and discoveries have been made in the country: a locomotive, bicycle, propeller, steam turbine, an electromagnet, stereo sound, photography, antibiotics, in the field of IT technologies - HTML, HTTP and others.

Brazil

Brazil takes the ninth place in this list ($41.1 billion). Over the past decades, science in Brazil has achieved significant success. The Ministry of Science and Technology of the country exercises control over many agencies - the National Institute for Space Research, the National Institute for Research in the Amazon and the National Institute of Technology.

Russia

Russia closes the top 10 countries with maximum investment in science ($39.9 billion). In the Russian Federation, the cost of research and development per researcher amounts to $93 thousand per year. Russia is one of the world leaders in terms of the extent of employment in science. In 2016, the number of researchers in the country reached 428.9 thousand.
